3 x Victorian Dressing Table Jars with Silver Lids
Here we have an attractive set of three late Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Jars with Sterling Silver Lids. The circular glass jars are hobnail cut around the bodies and star cut on the bases. The silver lids have an embossed Green Man design with his face peering out from the foliage and a bird on the opposite side. There is a central cartouche on each jar which is engraved with a monogram made up of the letters J, H, C & D, although it is quite rubbed and a bit tricky to read. The undersides of the lids are gilded.
The set was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Mitchell Bosley & Co and dates to 1900 on the small jars and 1901 on the large jar. The firm was active between the late 1880s and around 1910, operating from premises in Bath Street on the edge of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They produced a wide range of silverware and silver mounted glass with their mark often seen on decanters and dressing table sets as well as sovereign cases and smoking accessories.
The glass jars are in very good condition with no chips or cracks. The silver lids have become a little squashed down with perhaps a heavy handed owner putting slightly too much pressure on them when pushing them closed. There is one very small hole in the large jar lid where the silver has been polished through. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The large jar is 7.2cm / 2.8ins in diameter and 8.1cm / 3.2ins tall. The two small jars are 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter and 5.5cm / 2.1ins tall. The silver lids by themselves weigh in at 47.5g / 1.67oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 545.7g / 19.25oz.
The hallmarks on the lids are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 on the small jars and b for 1901 on the large jar and the M B makers' mark for Mitchell Bosley & Co.
