2 x Victorian Silver Salts, Elkington & Co, 1885
Here we have a fine quality pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts with Gilded Interiors. The salts are cauldron shaped with a decorative engraved band of interlinked circles around the body and a wavy top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salts were made in Birmingham by famous silversmiths Elkington & Co and date to 1885. Elkington & Co are one of the great names of English silverware. Founded by George Elkington in 1836, they took out the world's first silver electroplating patent in 1838 and this is what they are best known for. However they always continued to produce very high quality Sterling Silver alongside their silver plate. The company was merged into British Silverware with Walker & Hall and Mappin & Webb in 1963.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just a small amount of salt corrosion to the interiors plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 5cm / 1.9ins in diameter and stands 3.5cm / 1.4ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 71.5g / 2.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1885, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the F E makers' mark for Frederick Elkington, who was head of Elkington & Co between 1868 and 1888. They also have the Elkington & Co retail stamp below the hallmarks.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salts.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
