2 x Victorian Silver Salts & Spoons, Hukin & Heath
This is a very stylish pair of late Victorian Sterling Silver Salts & Spoons. The set is made by famous silversmiths Hukin & Heath in Birmingham and dates to 1898. Jonathan Hukin and John Heath founded their company in Birmingham in 1855. They are best known for their association with Dr Christopher Dresser who designed many pieces for them between around 1877 and 1881 and sporadically thereafter.
These salts feature a crinkle rim and stand on three ball feet. The spoons have round bowls and plain stems with ball finials. So many sets of salts and spoons have become separated over the years that it is always very welcome to find a matching set.
The salts and spoons are in good condition with no dings or dents and just a small amount of salt marking, which is only to be expected after over 120 years of use! Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salts are each 3.5cm / 1.5" in diameter and 2.5cm / 1" high. The spoons are 5.3cm / 2.2" long. The whole set of two salts and two spoons together weigh a respectable 39.5g / 1.4oz.
The hallmarks on all the pieces are clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "y" for 1898 (one spoon has the date letter "z" for 1899) and the JTH over JHM makers' mark for John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton of Hukin & Heath.
