2 x Victorian Dishes, G'smiths & S'smiths, 1900
Here we have a top quality pair of late Victorian Pierced Dishes. The dishes are navette or boat shaped with oval bases and raised ends. The sides have paired lines of rectangular piercings, the top rims are beaded and there are embossed frame and harebell decorations inside each raised end. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The dishes are made in London by the famous Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and date to the year 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's reign. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, the firm had a factory in Clerkenwell and a showroom on London's prestigious Regent Street. They became a byword for luxury jewellery and accessories, the finest silverware and top quality clocks and watches. They merged with Garrard & Co in 1952.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced work and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from Goldsmiths & Silversmiths, these are very well made items in a good heavy gauge of silver. Each dish is 16cm / 6.3ins long, 8cm / 3.15ins wide and stands 3.7cm / 1.45ins high. The pair together weighs in at an impressive 191.3g / 6.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of each dish, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the distinctive trefoil G & S Co Ld makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
