2 x Victorian Crested Silver Pepper Shakers, 1889
This is a smart pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shakers. The shakers are pear shaped and rest on a low pedestal foot and have a bell shaped finial on each lid. Each pepper has a crest of an eagle rising from a tower with a crosslet cross in its beak engraved onto the body.
The pepper shakers are made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths Thomas Bradbury & Sons and date to 1889. The firm traced its history back to cutlers Matthew Fenton & Co in 1736 with Thomas Bradbury joining the firm around 1795. By 1831 it was renamed Thomas Bradbury & Son, later Sons, and continued in business until the Second World War when it was acquired by Atkin Brothers.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each pepper shaker is 7.2cm / 2.8ins high and 2.7cm / 1.1ins in diameter at the widest point. The pair together weigh in at a respectable 43.9g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the bodies and the inside rims of the lids, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter W for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J B in a shield makers' mark for Joseph Bradbury of Thomas Bradbury & Sons.
