2 x George III Table Spoons, Hester Bateman, 1773

Here we have a fine Pair of George III Sterling Silver Table Spoons in the classic Old English pattern. The spoons have a crest engraved at the tops of the stems of a cockerel standing atop a castle. This is a device used historically by the Johnson family of Bath in the West of England.
The table spoons were made in London by the remarkable Hester Bateman and date to 1773. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company and led to a dynasty of silversmiths that lasted four generations.
Condition is good with just a few little dings in the bowls and a small amount of wear to the tips commensurate with over 250 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 22.5cm / 8.8ins long and the pair together weigh in at a substantial 120g / 4.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are bottom struck on the undersides of the stems and as you would expect are slightly distorted but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter S for 1773 and the distinctive script H B makers' mark for Hester Bateman.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
