2 x Edwardian Silver Candlesticks, Charles Boyton
Here we have a fine quality Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The sticks have circular bases which are weighted for stability, tapered stems with a single knop and urn shaped sconces with removable nozzles. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Charles Boyton & Sons and date to 1910. The firm was founded in London by Charles Boyton (I) in 1825, based at a number of locations before finally settling in Clerkenwell. They established a reputation for fine workmanship and design that was maintained across four generations of Charles Boytons until, along with many other firms, they hit economic difficulties in the early 1930s. In 1934 a new company was formed called Charles Boyton & Son Ltd that continued into the 1970s but no members of the Boyton family were involved in this.
Overall condition is good, with just a few little dings around the bases plus the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick is 16cm / 6.3ins high and 8.8cm / 3.5ins in diameter across the base. The pair together weigh in at 470g / 16.6oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the side rims of the bases, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter l for 1910 and the trefoil C B & S makers' mark for Charles Boyton & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
