12 x Victorian Silver Coffee Spoons + Tongs, 1888
This is a superior quality cased set of twelve Victorian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons plus a pair of Sugar Tongs. The spoons and tongs are in the classic Old English shape but lifted to a much higher level by exquisite engraved decoration down the fronts of the stems and along both arms of the tongs. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set is made in London by the renowned silversmiths Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates to 1888. The firm was started in Clerkenwell by Henry Holland in 1838. Holland was an astute businessman and acquired other well regarded silversmiths such as Elizabeth Eaton, Chawner & Co and Robert Hennel. With the arrival of new partners, the firm became Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1883 and remained in business until the early 1930s.
Condition is very good with just a small ding to the rim of the bowl of one spoon plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. The box is a little scuffed on the outside but the glorious dark pink inside is in fine condition and the hinges and catch are in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each coffee spoon is 10.1cm / 3.9ins long whilst the sugar tongs are 8.9cm / 3.5ins long. The set of spoons and tongs together, uncased, weighs in at a substantial 115.4g / 4.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the spoons and tongs are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter N for 1888, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JA over TS makers' mark for John Aldwinckle and Thomas Slater of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
