Hille
Hille furniture company, London furniture maker.
Founded by Salamon Hille in east London in 1906 to renovate and reproduce 18th century furniture. They employed skilled craftsmen and the emphasis was given to quality rather than volume. The company soon gained an international reputation especially in the US. After the war the company changed direction and Salamon's daughter, Ray, started working in the business and, after Salamon died, his other daughter Cherill Scheer joined in 1961.
They had great success with the Polyside Chair and other modernist pieces designed by Robin Day who went on to design for them for over 20 years. His designs included the Hillstack chair, a stacking chair which used laminated wood. These chairs became popular for public buildings and The Polyprop made in polypropylene was at one point the world's best selling chair.
The family stopped being involved in furniture in 1983 when they sold the business. Today, Hille's core business
