Glasgow School of Arts & Crafts

Glasgow became the centre for a strong network of Arts and Crafts workers, artists and designers who were responsible for creating the distinctive Glasgow style.

The most prominent of these were Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret MacDonald and Frances and Herbert MacNair (known as The Four). The Glasgow girls were a group of female designers and artists and the Glasgow boys were a group of men brought together by a passion for realism and naturalism which showed through in their work. They were responsible for creating the distinctive Glasgow style. Between them they defined the Glasgow style's fusion of influences including the Celtic revival, the Arts and Crafts movement, and Japonisme. Glasgow School of Art was pivotal in encouraging these new influences.
