William IV Silver Butter Knife, William Eaton 1835

This is a good quality William IV Sterling Silver Butter Knife or Spreader in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The knife has a curved scimitar shaped blade with thread decoration along the top. The initials R J are elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.
The butter knife was made in London by noted silversmith William Eaton and dates to 1835. William Eaton was a specialist spoon maker who registered his first mark at Goldsmiths Hall in 1813. He produced very high quality flatware up until his death in 1845, at which point his widow Elizabeth took over the running of the business, being joined by their son John in 1858. The firm was finally sold to Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater in 1863.
Condition is good with no dings or dents, a very slight knock to the tip and the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 19.9cm / 7.8ins long and 3cm / 1.2ins across the blade. It weighs in at a very respectable 61.3g / 2.16oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter u for 1835, the William IV duty mark and the W E makers' mark for William Eaton.
