Vintage Silver Condiment Set, Birmingham, 1967
This is a very smart Vintage Elizabeth II Sterling Silver 3 Piece Condiment Set. The set consists of a mustard pot with blue glass liner and spoon, an open salt with blue glass liner and spoon and a pepper shaker. The three pieces are of octagonal shape and the blue glass liners are original. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The condiment set is made in Birmingham by silversmiths J.B. Chatterley & Sons and dates to 1967, with the mustard spoon dating to 1968 and the salt spoon to 1971. It is possible that this salt spoon is a later replacement for one that had been lost or damaged. John Bishop Chatterley started his firm in the 1880s becoming J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd in 1896. They manufactured in Birmingham and had a showroom in London's Hatton Garden district. They produced a wide range of both silverware and electroplate and remained in business into the mid-1990s.
Condition is very good with just a couple of small dings in the pepper shaker plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 55 years of use. The blue glass liners have no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt is 4.7cm / 1.8ins across and stands 2.7cm / 1.06ins high, with the spoon being 6.3cm / 2.5ins long. The mustard pot is 6.3cm / 2.5ins from rim to handle, 4.7cm / 1.8ins across and 4.3cm / 1.7ins high, with the spoon being 7cm / 2.7ins long. The pepper shaker is 3.1cm / 1.2ins across 6.3cm / 2.5ins high. Without the blue glass liners, the set weighs in at a substantial 159.9g / 5.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 226.3g / 8oz.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases and the stems of the spoons, are all well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter S for 1967, T for 1968 or W for 1971 and the J B C & S Ld makers' mark for J.B. Chatterley & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
