Victorian Tortoiseshell Silver & Gold Piqué Purse
A Victorian, Aesthetic Period, tortoiseshell purse with silver and gold piqué decoration. vacant silver shield cartouche to the back and blue silk-moiré interior with white metal fittings - About 1890 - 7cm x 5cm x 2cm. This Aesthetic period purse is one of the prettiest I have ever seen and in remarkable condition for its age. It is in the form of a book with a hinged catch. The cover depicts a butterfly and a ground flower in gold piqué with a further tall flower in silver-piqué. The piqué work is of exceptional quality and fineness and set in contrasting dark tortoiseshell. The back of the "book" has a vacant silver (unmarked), shield-form cartouche. Inside, the purse has four compartments of folded blue silk moiré, one of which has a secure white metal closure.
Overall the conditon is outstanding for its age. The observations below are intended for completeness and transparency and there is nothing material that detracts from the aesthetics or function of the piece. The front and back of the purse are near perfect. There is no lifting, tearing or other damage to the pique work. There are minor nibbles to the inside edges of the toroiseshell and a larger one to the hinge side. The catch appears to work as designed. There are no tears or fraying to the interior silk-work, but minor discolouration/fading to the edges. The catch on the interior compartment works well.
I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.
I will always mention anything that materially affects the aesthetic or function of a piece, but will not attempt to describe what I consider to be normal for age and use. Please use the photographs as well as you can and I’m always happy to answer specific questions.
