Victorian Silver Trinket Dish, William Comyns 1890
This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Trinket Dish. The dish is oval with a crimped rim. The base is embossed with a curving fan design around a central blank cartouche. It would look very elegant on any dressing table or bedside cabinet today.
The trinket dish was made in London by renowned silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1890. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents, just a few tiny pinholes created by many years of polishing plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dish is 11.5cm / 4.5ins long by 7.2cm / 2.8ins wide and 0.8cm / 0.31ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 34.6g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Siver.
The hallmarks, on the inside base in one corner, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1890 and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.
