Victorian Silver Sovereign & Half Sovereign Case

This is a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Sovereign and Half Sovereign Case. The case is oblong with rounded corners and a plain smooth finish. The inside of the lid is gilded. The top of the lid has the initials J B C elegantly engraved on it in script style.
The sovereign case is made in Birmingham by silversmiths Minshull & Latimer and dates to 1894. Minshull & Latimer was set up in the mid-1880s in Vyse Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They specialised in small items for personal use such as vesta cases, sovereign cases, flasks, cigarette and cigar cases and napkin rings although their mark is occasionally seen on larger items of tableware. They had pieces assayed in both Birmingham and Chester and remained in business into the Edwardian era.
Condition is good with just a couple of very shallow dings to the back of the case and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected in an item of this age and use. The push button lock, hinge and both spring loaded coin holders are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign case is 4.8cm / 1.9ins long, 4.3cm / 1.7ins wide and 1.1cm / 0.43ins deep. It weighs a very respectable 29.0g / 1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The principal set of hallmarks are on the inside of the lid. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter u for 1894 and the M & L makers' mark for Minshull & Latimer. There are further partial hallmarks on the lower part of the case, the spring loaded coin rests and the jump ring so you can be sure that this is Sterling Silver throughout.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
