Victorian Silver Salt Spoon, Wakely & Wheeler 1888 Victorian Salt Spoon %%alt5%%
This is a fine late Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon is made in London by Wakely & Wheeler and dates to 1888. James Wakely & Frank Wheeler formed their partnership in 1884 as a successor company to the renowned Lias family of silversmiths with whom James Wakely had been in partnership since 1878. The firm of Wakely & Wheeler Ltd remained in business up until 1957.

The spoon is well made in a decent gauge of silver and is a transitional piece between the large salt spoons of the Georgian and early Victorian eras and the small ones that became standard in the 20th century. It has the initials "DSL" elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The salt spoon is in good condition with no dings or dents and only the surface wear you would expect after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 7.7cm / 3" long and weighs a respectable 7.5g / 0.26oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and clear to read with just a slight amount of rubbing on the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "N" for 1888, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW over FCW for James Wakely and Frank Clarke Wheeler of Wakely & Wheeler.
