Victorian Silver Photo Frame, Birmingham, 1898
This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Photo Frame. The frame is easel backed and stands upright with a visible picture size of 5.5ins by 3.75ins. The silver front of the frame has a pierced design of scrolls and flowers with a blank central cartouche at the top. The back has a dark red leather covering with dark red velvet down the strut and the inside is lined with dark red silk.
The photo frame was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths Synyer & Beddoes and dates to 1898. Founded by Harry Synyer and Charles Joseph Beddoes in 1896, the firm operated from premises in Vyse Street at the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They produced a very wide range of silverware of consistently good quality and remained in business until around 1950.
Condition is good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the cartouche plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. The red leather back is a little scuffed and there is some wear to the silk backing but this obviously isn't visible when there is a photo in the frame. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The photo frame stands 20.5cm / 8.1ins high by 14.4cm / 5.7ins across and is 10.5cm / 4.1ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs in at 240g / 8.46oz.
The hallmarks, at the top of the frame above the cartouche, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter y for 1898 and the distinctive S and B either side of a star makers' mark for Synyer & Beddoes.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the photo frame.
