Victorian Silver Pepper Shaker, Wm. Hutton, 1887

This is a charming Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The small shaker is pot shaped with a bark effect finish all around the body. The pull off lid is flat with a turned handle and ball finial. The interior is gilded.
The pepper shaker was made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1887. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is good, with just one small shallow flat spot on the body plus the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 135 years of use. The lid fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 4.7cm / 1.8ins high and is 2.7cm / 1in across. It weighs in at 12.4g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, at the top of the body and on the rim of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E H makers' mark for Edward Hutton of William Hutton & Sons.
