Victorian Silver Mustard Pot-Stokes & Ireland-1898
This is a very elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original blue glass liner. The mustard pot is oval in shape with the sides pierced in a geometric design allowing the blue glass liner to be seen within. The thumb rest has two small horns on it. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot is made in a heavy gauge of silver by Stokes & Ireland Ltd and assayed in London in 1898. William H. Stokes and Arthur G. Ireland formed their partnership in Birmingham around 1890 and remained in business up until the start of the Second World War. Although based in Birmingham, most of their items were assayed in either Chester or London.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced decoration and only the minimal surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. The blue glass liner has no chips or cracks. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot is 9.4cm / 3.6ins from rim to handle, 4.3cm / 1.7ins across and stands 6.6cm / 2.6ins to the top of the thumb rest. Without the glass liner it weighs in at a very respectable 87.1g / 3.07oz of solid Sterling Silver. With the glass liner it weighs 189.8g / 6.7oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are a little rubbed but still clear to read and there is a second set on the inside of the lid which are nice and crisp. On the base they are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard\'s head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the S.I.Ld makers\' mark for Stokes & Ireland Ltd. On the inside of the lid are the lion passant, the date letter c and the S.I.Ld makers\' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
