Victorian Silver Jack of Clubs Dish, W Comyns 1884 Victorian Silver Dish %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have an unusual and fun Victorian Sterling Silver Dish with a Jack or Knave of Clubs design. The overall dish is shaped as a club from a pack of cards with a chased design of a full length Jack or Knave amongst acanthus scrolls on the base.

This would embellish any cards table for holding counters or chips, could be used as a trinket dish on a dressing table or bedside cabinet or would be ideal for holding small stationery items on a desk.

The dish was made in London by the renowned silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1884. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.

Condition is very good, with just one tiny split in the upper indent on the left hand side plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 140 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 10.4cm / 4.1ins from top to bottom, 11cm / 4.3ins across and 1.1cm / 0.43ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 52.7g / 1.86oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the dish, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter I for 1884, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
