Victorian Silver Dish, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths
Here we have an excellent quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish is round with a daisy base, pierced sides and a bead and shell pattern around the rim. The outside of the body has harebell swags.
The bonbon dish is made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co of Regent Street and dates to 1897. Founded by William Gibson and John Langman in 1880, the firm quickly established a reputation as jewellers and silversmiths of the highest quality. They manufactured in Clerkenwell and Sheffield and sold through their Regent Street showroom. They merged with another great firm, Garrard & Co, in 1952.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
As you would expect from the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, this is a very well made piece in a heavy gauge of silver. It measures 12.9cm / 5.07ins in diameter across the top rim and stands 3.5cm / 1.37ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 127.1g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the W G over J L makers' mark for William Gibson and John Langman of the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. It also has the retail stamp for Goldsmiths Company, 112 Regent Street.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dish.
