Victorian Silver Card Case, Birmingham, 1867

Here we have an attractive Victorian Sterling Silver Card Case. The hinged lid case is oblong with a scalloped rim and shell motifs at top and bottom. The body has engine turned decoration in wavy lines to front and back with a blank shield shaped cartouche on the front.
The card case was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Hilliard & Thomason and dates to 1867. John Hilliard established his business in 1837 in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Around 1840 he was joined by John Thomason and the firm was renamed Hilliard & Thomason. They were very successful and established a reputation for fine quality small items for domestic, table and personal use. The firm remained in business up until around 1910.
Condition is good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 155 years of good service. The hinge is in full working order and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case is 9.6cm / 3.8ins by 6.9cm / 2.7ins and weighs in at 53.4g / 1.88oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter S for 1867, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the H & T makers'mark for Hilliard & Thomason.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
