Victorian Silver & MOP Butter Knife, B'ham, 1897
This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Butter Knife with a Mother of Pearl handle. The scimitar shaped blade is beautifully engraved with a scrolling design within a border and is attached to the handle by a distinctively Art Nouveau style ferrule, which is separately hallmarked. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The butter knife is made in Birmingham by Henry Williamson Ltd and dates to 1897. Founded in the early 1890s, Henry Williamson Ltd manufactured in Birmingham and had a showroom in London's Farringdon Road. They produced a huge range of small silver items and remained in business up until around 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents to the silver and no damage to the mother of pearl handle. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The butter knife is 15.5cm / 6.1ins long and weighs 27.6g / 0.97oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the blade, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter x for 1897 and the H.W.Ld makers' mark for Henry Williamson Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
