Here we have a fine quality, large late Victorian Sterling Silver Shell Dish. The dish is unusual in being of elongated shape rather than the more common rounder scallop shell shape. The front of the dish is supported on two feet shaped as winkle shells. There are no initials or personaliation of any kind.

The dish was made in London by silversmiths Jackson & Deere for retailer Watherston & Son and dates to 1887. Founded by William Jackson and Peter Deere in 1887, the firm initially operated from premises in Spencer Street, Clerkenwell, the centre of silver manufacturing in London in the 19th century. The partnership was quite short lived, ending in 1895, after which William Jackson continued on his own until his death in 1905.
Watherston & Son was the retail and manufacturing business of James Watherston and his son Edward, established in London's Pall Mall in 1864 and later moved to Vigo Street, off Regent Street. They are best known for their jewellery but also retailed a wide range of silver and electroplate. The store closed in 1911.

Condition is very good with just one tiny ding in the handle end of the dish plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is a well made piece in a good, heavy gauge of silver measuring 17.2cm / 6.8ins long, 9.5cm / 3.7ins across and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 142.2g / 5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the dish, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the W J over P D makers' mark for William Jackson and Peter Deere. In addition there is the retail stamp of a crown above Watherston and London for Watherston & Son.
