Victorian Cut Glass Inkwell w/ Silver Lid, 1889
Here we have a charming small Victorian Cut Glass Inkwell with a Sterling Silver Collar and Lid. The glass body of the inkwell is hobnail cut on all four sides with a smooth base and chamfered top. The silver lid is engraved with concentric circles of wavy, dot and geometric designs. The central cartouche is blank.
The inkwell was made in Sheffield by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1889. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 4cm / 1.57ins square and stands 4.7cm / 1.85ins high. It weighs in at 146.3g / 5.16oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the collar, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Siver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter W for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the R M over E H in a diamond makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co. There is a secondary partial set of the lion passant and the makers' mark on the inside of the lid.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
