Victorian Cut Crystal Pitcher with Silver Lid, 1897 Victorian Crystal Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a stunning Victorian Cut Crystal Pitcher with a Sterling Silver Collar and Lid. The hand blown pitcher has a circular star cut base, a tapered body decorated with swirls, diamonds and wheels and a curving handle. The silver collar, spout and lid are plain with a pierced thumb rest. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

This type of pitcher is often referred to as a lemonade jug and indeed would be fabulous in the summer with cold, fresh lemonade in it. However these jugs always had a variety of uses and today it is ideal as a water jug on the dining table, for serving Pimm's in the summer or a warm spiced fruit cordial in the winter.

The pitcher was made in London by the renowned firm of Drew & Sons and dates to 1897. Founded by Samuel Summers Drew in the 1840s, Drew & Sons were high end manufacturers and retailers based initially in Piccadilly Circus and later in Regent Street. They were particularly known for leather goods and luggage, picnic sets and silverware and had a whole floor dedicated to military furniture and campaign equipment. They held Royal Warrants from Queen Victoria and many of the crowned heads of Europe. They ceased trading in the late 1930s.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the crystal, no dings or dents in the silver and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pitcher stands 27.5cm / 10.8ins high and is 13.4cm / 5.3ins in diameter across the base. It weighs in at 1.51kg / 53.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the side of the collar and the underside of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the S.S.D over E.D makers' mark for Samuel Summers Drew and Edwin Drew of Drew & Sons. In addition the underside of the lid has the retail stamp DREW & SONS, PICCADILLY CIRCUS, LONDON.

Shipping in the UK is £22 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the weight and value of the pitcher.
