Victorian Card Case with Pencil, George Unite, 1892
Here we have an exquisite late Victorian Sterling Silver Card Case complete with mechanical pencil. The oblong case is engraved front and back with a dense pattern of ivy leaves (a symbol of fidelity) and there is an oval blank cartouche on the front. The interior is fitted out with two tan leather pockets for visting cards which are lined with purple silk.
The card case was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths George Unite & Sons and dates to 1892. George Unite & James Hilliard founded the firm in 1825 as Unite & Hilliard. After Hilliard withdrew in the 1830s, George continued by himself before the firm became George Unite & Sons in 1865. The business remained under the management of the Unite family until 1897 when it was taken over by William Lyde who retained the name up until the late 1920s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years of good service. The pencil appears to be in good working order but it will need pencil leads. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The card case measures 8.5cm / 3.3ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and is 0.8cm / 0.31ins deep at the hinged end. It weighs in at 66.2g / 2.3oz.
The hallmarks, on both the front and back of the case, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter s for 1892 and the G U makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the card case.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
