A unique French Art Nouveau sterling silver seal / stamp in the original case. This exquisitely beautiful seal was especially commissioned for a client with the initials of C G or G C - the initials are intertwined & so you can not tell which initial is first - nor does it matter. This a high quality piece was made in the 1900s by master silversmith Paul Royer who was known to be active between 1900 - 1913. The seal is fully hallmarked in three places. As you would expect with high quality French silver the hallmarks are tiny but even so the maker's mark - 'P. R. une fleur de lis' is clear enough to identify. The finish of the silver is so superb that this piece should never be cleaned. Royer has used a finish which renders the silver with an ancient look - VERY stylish! The seal is adorned with flowers, some of which are like the Tudor rose & Acanthus leaves - some naturalistic & some highly stylized. The work is of the highest calibre & the seal is certainly an objet d'art. The symbolism and meaning associated with the Acanthus is that of enduring life. Which is why it is so often present at funerary celebrations. In Christianity (certainly this would not be lost on a French catholic at this time) the thorny leaves represent punishment, pain & sin. The whole piece is exceptionally well made & in superb condition. The enchanting little case is super. The whole exterior case is clad in a subtle mottled sage green leather with gilt accents on the lid. The green leather continues into the inner case where the gilt accents are even more vibrant. The interior lid is clad in cream silk & the interior base is cream velvet. There aren't any rips or tears to this fabric. The clasp on the case works perfectly.
This silver Art Nouveau solid silver seal measures 6.5 cm & weighs 40.6 grams.
Please note that from December 2024 we will no longer ship to Germany or any other EU country.
