Soviet Era Silver Mounted Drinking Horn, Georgia
Here we have a vintage Soviet Era Silver Mounted Drinking Horn from Tbilisi, the capital of now independent Georgia. The vessel consists of a natural horn, probably bovine, with a deep silver collar at the open end which is decorated with vines and bunches of grapes. It dates to between the late 1950s and the mid 1970s.
The collar is made in 875 / 1000 grade silver, which was the standard in the Soviet Union era. After the Russian Revolution in 1917, there was no silver working permitted in the new Soviet Union for many years but by the 1930s a number of state owned silversmiths were operating and a series of assay offices had been set up. After the Second World War, the system was revised again in the late 1950s and continued into the mid 1970s and it is from this period that the drinking horn dates.
Condition is very good with no splits in the horn or in the silver. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The drinking horn is 20cm / 7.9ins long with a diameter of 5.3cm / 2.1ins at the open end. It weighs 80.9g / 2.8oz.
The collar is marked with two stamps, both clear to read. One has the hammer & sickle in a star of the Soviet Union, the number 875, showing it is 875 / 1000 grade silver and the cyrillic letter for the Tbilisi assay office. The other mark has a mix of cyrillic letters and numbers and this indicates the state owned maker who created the silver collar but sadly we haven't been able to identify this.
