Sirjan Salt-Bag 103cm x 70cm
This type of bag, also known as a torba, is traditionally used for storing personal possessions, but also sometimes as a cushion stuffed with feathers.
They are not normally made for export, but for domestic use that is the reason they are often carefully and beautifully made, and they can be very decorative. The front face is carpet and the reverse is usually Kilim.
This example is particularly vibrant, with it’s main colouring being in striking amber. The inner filed design is wonderfully detailed with it’s maze like key patternation, weaving around three central split diamonds. The reverse is also energetic without over doing itself, showing a combination of horizontal lines in saffron alongside pretty borders of flower motifs. This piece is particularly geometric in its execution. The base of the bag has the traditional flowing fringe and the top boasts as sturdy rivet hole design to one edge and a set of loop hooks to the other. This is how the bag would be carried or indeed hung. It should be noted that this examples main loop hole to its center is rather worn but still useable.
These bags have a multitude of uses that could include using the piece as a cushion, a rug, a beautiful wall hanging or as a personal storage bag as the maker probably intended. A small price to pay for a very useable and versatile work of art.
