Silver Sugar Caster, Robert Pringle, London, 1936
This is a very stylish Sterling Silver Sugar Caster from the 1930s. It is made in London by noted silversmiths Robert Pringle & Sons and dates to 1936. Robert Pringle started his business in London's Clerkenwell Road around 1870, with his sons joining the business in the mid-1880s. They remained a family run firm until finally closing in the late 1950s. They are best known for their range of consistently good quality tableware and flatware.
This is a very distinctive urn shaped sugar caster with an elegant pierced lid and a neat turned finial. It's a high quality item in a good gauge of silver.
Overall condition is good but there is a small ding on one side of the body. Other than that there is only very minimal wear as you expect in an item of this age and use. The lid fits securely and the inside is nice and clean. It could be used as a sugar caster today or would make a nice addition to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar caster is 15cm / 5.9" high and 5.2cm / 2" in diameter at its widest part. It weighs a very respectable 105.8g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the body are well struck and clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "A" for 1936 and the R.P makers' mark for Robert Pringle & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the caster.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs before making a purchase.
