Silver Spoon & Fork Set, Atkin Brothers, 1918
This is a good quality George V Sterling Silver Spoon & Fork set in the Hanoverian pattern. The set is made in Sheffield by Atkin Brothers and dates to the end of the First World War in 1918. The Atkin Brothers, under the leadership of eldest brother Harry and later his son Harry Jr, founded their company in Sheffield in 1853. They were very successful with both silver and silver plate flatware and cutlery as well as other tableware and domestic items and remained in business for over a century before being bought out in 1958.
This spoon and fork set are in the Hanoverian pattern first introduced around 1710. It was revived in the early 20th century and proved to be very popular, particularly in the interwar years. The set is elegantly engraved with a letter "B" at the top of each stem. They were most probably given as a christening present but could have been for some other form of presentation such as a retirement or significant birthday. They would be ideal as a gift today.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and only minimal surface wear. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 15.8cm / 6.25" long, the fork is 15.6cm / 6.2" long and the pair together weigh a respectable 56.1g / 1.98oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the stems are well struck and very clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "a" for 1918 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
