Silver Plate Spirit Kettle, James Deakin & Sons
This is a fine quality late 19th / early 20th century Silver Plate Spirit Kettle complete with its stand and burner. The kettle has a part reeded body with an arched handle and side opening lid. The stand is on four feet with line decorated legs and a star cut top with the burner supported on four struts below.
The spirit kettle was made in Sheffield by James Deakin and Sons and dates to between around 1890 and 1920. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.
Whilst the kettle has seen some use, condition is generally good with just a little plate rubbing on the high points of the design. Both keys are present and hold the kettle securely on the stand. If the rear key is removed, the kettle pivots smoothly on the front one. The burner is in working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The kettle on its stand is 34cm / 13.4ins high. It is 20cm / 7.9ins from spout to rear and 15cm / 5.9ins across. It weighs in at 1.43kg / 50.4oz.
The underside of the kettle is marked on the underside with EP for silver plate along with JD & S and the desk bell trademark for James Deakin & Sons.
