Brief History:
The famous Bateman family firm of silversmiths was originally found by John Bateman who is believed to have worked as a journeyman silversmith or watch maker. Upon his death in 1760 the business was taken over by his wife Hester Bateman, who registered her first mark in 1761.
With her strong head for business, Hester Bateman turned a small family business into one of the largest and most important silversmith manufactures of the late 18th and early 19th century, producing a vast array of items, most notably flatware, cream jugs, decanter labels & caddy spoons.
Hester Bateman retired from the business in 1791 when it was taken over by two her sons, Peter & Jonathan, Jonathan died a few months later, leaving the running of the firm to his brother Peter and his widow Ann. In 1800 Ann\'s son William joined the firm, with Ann retiring in 1805 & Peter in 1815. William Bateman II (son of William Bateman I) registered his mark independently of his father in 1827, his father finally retiring in 1839, and the firm ceased to exist in 1843.
