Rare Irish silver napkin ring, Wm. Egan of Cork Silver Irish Provincial
Rare & collectable Vintage provincial Irish silver napkin ring. Hallmarked for Dublin, 1945.
Makers mark for William Egan & Sons, of Patrick Street, Cork.
A handsome heavy 'D' shaped napkin ring, with substantial reeded & crossbanded rims.
No engraved monogram or initials.

Early silver made in Cork often carried an Assay mark unique to that city, but by the time this piece was made in 1945, it was required by law that all items carried the Dublin Assay mark. It is generally accepted that a piece can be described as 'Cork silver' if the maker's mark is that of a recorded Cork silversmith.

William Egan and Sons were a renowned firm of provincial Irish Silversmiths, Watchmakers, Diamond Merchants, Jewellers and Ecclesiastical Furnishers, always situated in Cork, latterly at 32 & 33, Patrick Street.

The business was an old and long established one, founded in 1824, and passing from father to son, each succeeding possessor adding fresh renown to the already honourable traditions of the business. The firm's reputation extended over the whole of Ireland and the United States, where a representative was constantly employed.

The firm had an interesting history, particularly concerning Republican silver made during the Civil War, of which very few pieces survive. The period before and after the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in London on the 6th December, 1921, which was to create the Irish Free State, was a time of great disturbance in Cork, a fiercely Republican city. During the sacking of Cork on the night of the 11th December, 1920 numerous businesses caught fire, including Egan's premises in Patrick Street. Egan’s was rebuilt in 1925 with a splendid Celtic revival shop front and landmark antique clock, and continued in business until 1986.

Egan silver is beautiful, well made, and very collectable. It is scarce without being impossible to find. The maker’s mark ‘WE’ in celtic style script is very distinctive.
