Rare Early Solid Silver Caddy Spoon 1797 Birmingham
Extremely rare silver leaf-shaped caddy spoon. Incredibly detailed, it is engraved with veins, and seed pods and has a curling tendril handle. The engraving is beautifully done, utilising a variety of techniques.
Made by John Turner, Birmingham , bearing full hallmarks, for the year 1797. Unlike later caddy spoons, which were stamped from sheet silver, this graceful spoon was hand formed.
Wonderfully designed, the tip of the spoon acts as a spout to tip the contents of the spoon neatly into an awaiting teapot.
Extremely delicate and sculptural. Monogrammed F on base. In excellent condition.
There is a similar spoon from the same maker in the collection of the Victorian and Albert Museum, London, which can be viewed at collections.vam.ac.uk/item/094493/tea-caddy-spoon-john-turner/
