Portuguese Sterling Silver Letter Opener - Dog
A magnificent top quality novelty letter opener complete in it's original presentation case.
Made from Portuguese sterling silver fully marked on the underside of the tail bearing the "First Standard" mark alongside the Lisbon hallmark for 916 grade silver, Leitao and Irmao mark of a spinkx over a letter "L" together with their name.
This is one of Europe's creme de la creme of silversmith's having once made a challice for the Pope.
On December 1st 1887, king Luís grants to Leitão & Irmão the title of “Crown Jewellers”. Leitão & Irmão continued to be chosen by the Royal family to create gifts for family, friends and personalities. Queen Maria Pia was also an enthusiastic and loyal customer. She played a decisive role in the acquisition of numerous utilities and decorative objects in silver and gold, mostly of great refinement and sobriety, revealing a preference for the neo-rocaille taste.
This exquisite and rare piece is a heavy piece of solid silver weighing 85 Grams / 2.73 Troy Ounces beautifully crafted in the form of a Dachshund dog with a long blue tassel as a leash, the box interior is even shaped to accommodate this original blue cored tassel.
Charming and exquisite in superb condition measuring 8" x 2" with the box measuring 9 3/4" x 3 3/4" x 1". Art Deco in era, dating to the 1930's.
