Pair Victorian Silver Salt Spoons, London, 1853
Here we have a good quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Salt Spoons with Gilt bowls in the classic Fiddle pattern. The spoons are made in London by Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater and date to 1853. Hayne & Cater started their partnership in 1848 after the death of Samuel's father Jonathan Hayne, for whom they both worked and they continued together until 1864. They are best known for their good quality flatware but also made other items of tableware.
These are well made spoons in a good gauge of silver and the gilding to the bowls is always a sign of quality, helping to prevent salt corrosion of the silver. They have no initials or engraving of any kind. They would make a nice addition to a collection or they remain perfectly usable for any condiment on a modern dining table.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minor surface wear that has to be expected in spoons of this age and usage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 9.5cm / 3.75" long and the pair together weigh in at a respectable 21.2g / 0.75oz.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are well struck and clear to read, with the exception of the makers' marks which are somewhat worn but still decipherable. The hallmarks show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the gothic date letter "S" for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the SH over DC makers' mark for Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater.
