Superb pair of Victorian papier mache face screens, painted and gilded with flowers and birds. The screens have fine turned mahogany handles, with each papier mache screen being of a shell shape with scalloped edge. The screens have been finely decorated onto a gilded and black background, in oils with large boquets of exotic flowers and each has a bird, one a peacock and the other a bird of paradise. The edges of the decoration are gilded in elaborate scrolls. The pair are in excellent condition, with the odd small chip to the scalloped edge, and both have a wonderful honey coloured patina of age, it is unusual to find these screens in such good untouched condition.
