Pair George V Silver Pepper Pots-George Unite-1918
This is a pair of the very finest quality George V Sterling Silver Pepper Pots with Silver Gilt interiors. The pepperettes are made in Birmingham by the famous silversmiths George Unite & Sons and date to the end of WW1 in 1918. George Unite has a deserved reputation for producing consistently high quality silver, primarily for use on the table. He established his firm in 1825, becoming George Unite & Sons around 1870 and finally George Unite & Sons & Lyle Ltd between 1928 and 1933, when the company finally ceased trading.
As you would expect from George Unite, this superb pair of pepper shakers are very well made items in a good gauge of silver. They are in a Georgian inspired urn form, sitting on square bases. The insides of the shakers are gilded to protect the silver from corrosion. They would look stunning on any modern dining table or be a great addition to a collection.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents, no corrosion and only the most minimal surface wear. The gilt interiors are near perfect with no loss of the gold plating and no corrosion. It seems likely that they are pieces that have been kept for special occasions and well looked after in between. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper pots stand 7.5cm / 2.95" high and are 3.1cm / 1.25" square at the base. They weigh in at a very substantial 76.7g / 2.71oz.
The hallmarks on the side of each base are well struck and clear to read, with just a slight amount of rubbing to the makers' mark on one pepper shaker. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "t" for 1918 and the GU makers' mark for George Unite & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £8 by Royal Mail Special Delivery Parcel Post, which includes cover for the value of the items.
