Mathurin Moreau - The Berry Gatherer
Mathurin Moreau. (1822 - 1912) was a member of the famous Moreau family of French Sculptors. He first exhibited in the 1848 Salon receiving a medal of honour from the Salon in 1897. He was made Mayor of the XIXe arrondissement, Paris, and in 1912 had a street named in his honour. He had many public commissions and his statues and monuments are to be found in many parts of Paris.

The artist was a sculptor mainly of women. Unlike many other artists his work was almost exclusively based on real women rather than generic models. This large bronze dates from 1860, and is signed by the artist. It is also inscribed Hors Concours and with the Medaille d'Honneur stamp - reflecting awards and status achieved by the artist during his lifetime.

This rustic themed bronze is a finely cast and well detailed piece. It depicts a young maiden harvesting fruit. It is in excellent condition with no damage or repairs whatsoever. Ref Bronzes, sculptors and founders 1800 - 1930 by Berman. Vol two, page 276.
