Mappin & Webb is a luxury British jeweller / retailer which has a renowned tradition for producing superior quality luxury items for the discerning. Mappin & Webb holds a Royal Warrant as Jewellers, Goldsmiths and Silversmiths to Her Majesty The Queen and as Silversmiths to His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
As you would expect this is a high quality item. This fully hallmarked Victorian hip flask is superb. The glass is sound and very beautiful cut glass. The sterling silver hinged top is fully hallmarked. The hallmarks clearly show the maker, Mappin & Webb, that it is sterling silver assayed at Sheffield in 1896. The sterling silver base is fully hallmarked and was made by Mappin & Webb in 1898 as a bespoke commission for the original owner to offer the glass more protection. The base is also signed "MAPPIN&WEBB". So good when items have provenance in the form of a beautiful inscription - the lid is inscribed "Voilet" in elegant script. Whether it was Violet's hip flask or Violet gave this to her beau we have no idea, but it adds to the charm of this delightful antique.
This item measures almost 5 1/2" weighs 251.2 grams.
