Large Victorian Silver Shell Dish, Atkin Bros 1898
This is a very good quality large late Victorian Sterling Silver Shell Dish on three ball feet. The dish is made by renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers in Sheffield and dates to 1898. Atkin Brothers originated around 1840 when Henry Atkin set up his own firm. It became Atkin Brothers in 1853 under the leadership of Harry Atkin and remained a family firm until it was bought out in 1958.
This is a classic scallop shell design dish but is rather larger than is usually found. Traditionally these were butter dishes but this is large enough to serve a variety of different sauces or condiments on the dinner table or for holding rings, trinkets etc on a dressing table.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents but it does have two tiny splits, one either side where the shell joins the flat handle. These are not significant and have no effect on the function or appearance of the dish. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The shell dish is 14.9cm / 5.8" long, 13.3cm / 5.25" wide and 3.3cm / 1.25" high. It weighs a very substantial 96.0g / 3.39oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the upper side of the flat handle are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "f" for 1898 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
