Japanese Meiji (early 20thC) boxwood netsuke of Hotei. Beautifully carved. Unsigned. Measures 4.5cm high x 2.5cm wide x 2.5cm deep.

An eccentric Buddhist priest who lived in China during the 9th century, Budai (Hotei in Japanese) is usually portrayed as a happy wanderer unconcerned with social conventions or material wealth, who carried his meagre belongings around in a large sack.
