George VI Silver Strawberries & Cream Set, 1936/7 George VI Silver Thirties %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have a fine quality cased George VI Sterling Silver Strawberries and Cream Set from the 1930s. The set consists of a tall sugar caster for sprnkling over your strawberries and a tall cream jug for smothering them in cream. Both pieces are in Georgian Revival style with the circular feet mounted on square bases. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The cream jug and sugar caster are made in Sheffield by Viner's Ltd with the cream jug marked for 1936 and the sugar caster for 1937. Viner's was founded around 1900 by Adolphe Viener, who later Anglicized his family surname to Viner. Starting out as electroplaters, the firm moved into silverware in the early 1920s. They remained extremely successful up until the 1970s but later had difficulties and ceased trading in the 1980s. The Viner's brand name is now owned by Oneida.

Condition is extremely good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The box has a few minor scuff marks on the outside but is in good condition on the inside and the clasp and hinges are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The cream jug is 9.8cm / 3.8ins from lip to handle, 13.6cm / 5.3ins high to the top of the handle with the base being 4.8cm / 1.9ins square. The sugar caster is 5cm / 1.97ins in diameter at its widest point, 14.5cm / 5.7ins high and the base is 4.8cm / 1.9ins square. The two pieces together weigh in at a very substantial 202.3g / 7.14oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter t for 1936 or u for 1937 and the E.V makers' mark for Emile Viner of Viner's Ltd.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
