George VI Silver Pepper Shaker, Wm Hutton, 1939
This is a charming George VI Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker has a bulbous body standing on three stepped feet, a pie crust top rim and a domed caster top with a turned finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1939. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930, although they continued to operate as a separate business through the 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker is 5.7cm / 2.2ins high and 3cm / 1.2ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs in at a very respectable 26.2g / 0.92oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter w for 1939 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
