George V Silver Trophy Cup, A & J Zimmerman
This is a smart small George V Sterling Silver Trophy Cup. The cup has a circular stepped pedestal base, an urn shaped cup and two ornate scrolling handles. There are no initials or inscription of any kind making this ideal to carry on being presented as a trophy.
The trophy was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths A & J Zimmerman. The date letter is quite rubbed but we believe the cup dates to 1921. The firm was founded by brothers Arthur & John Zimmerman in Birmingham in 1879, operating from premises at Regent Place in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They later opened a second premises and a showroom in London. The firm produced a wide range of silverware of consistently good quality up until they ceased trading around 1930.
Condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over a hundred years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cup is 8cm / 3.1ins from handle to handle, 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and stands 8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 32.0g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are a little rubbed, particularly the date letter, but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, what we believe is the date letter w for 1921 and the distinctive A & J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman.
