George V Silver Soap Box, Wm. Hutton & Sons, 1914

Here we have an unusual and practical George V Sterling Silver Soap Box. The hinged lid box is a plain oblong with rounded corners. A crest of a dragon's head is elegantly engraved onto the top of the lid. This would probably have originally been part of a larger travelling vanity set for either a lady or a gentleman.
The soap box was made by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1914. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. The hinge is in full working order and the box shuts properly. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The soap box measures 9cm / 3.5ins by 6.5cm / 2.5ins and is 2.9cm / 1.1ins deep when closed. It weighs in at a substantial 131.8g / 4.65oz / 4.23toz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the cursive date letter O for 1914 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the soap box.
