George V Silver Shoe Horn & Button Hook, 1925/6
This is a fine set of a George V Sterling Silver Handled Shoe Horn and a Button Hook. The silver handles are triangular with beaded decoration on both sides. The blade of the shoe horn and the shaft of the button hook are made of steel. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Crisford & Norris with the button hook dated 1925 and the shoe horn dated 1926. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970
Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear to the silver and the steel that you would anticipate after 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Both items are 18.9cm / 7.4ins long, with the shoe horn being 3.1cm / 1.2ins wide and the button hook 1.8cm / 0.71ins wide. The two together weigh 90.0g / 3.2oz.
The hallmarks, at the tops of the handles, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter A for 1925 or B for 1926 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
