George V Silver Mr Punch Rattle & Teether, 1932
Here we have a fun George V Sterling Silver Rattle with a Teething Ring and a Mother of Pearl handle. The rattle is shaped as the head of Mr Punch and has four rattling bells suspended from it.
The rattle was made in Birmingham by Crisford & Norris and dates to 1932. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.
Condition is very good, with just a small flat spot to one of the bells plus the overall superficial wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The rattle is 19.1cm / 7.5ins long from handle to teething ring and 4.5cm / 1.8ins wide. It weighs in at 60.2g / 2.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the ferrule where the mother of pear handle is attached, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter H for 1932 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
